Top 5 Old Hollywood Movies

Saturday 2 April 2016

For those of you who don't know me well, I am a hugeeee lover of old Hollywood movies. I have always loved to finish the day snuggled in bed with a movie, browsing actresses and actors of the golden age from all the classics. Many people don't understand their appeal as they're over 50 year old films often stereotyped as being in black and white but for me there is a certain take on comedy and romance. Now Audrey Hepburn will forever be my favourite actress from the silver screen but today I thought the focus should include all films. Carry on reading to see what my top 5 old Hollywood movies are, you never know, they may even tickle your fancy..

Charade (1963)

Possibly my favourite Audrey film of all time. Regina Lampert is faced with several men who are after the fortune her late murdered husband had stolen. Regina learns the from Hamilton Bartholomew of the CIA that they are after they money and herself if the money doesn't make an appearance. Along the way Regina meets Peter Joshua aka Cary Grant (known by many different names) who agrees to help 'Reggie' and of course they eventually fall in love.

Oceans 11 (1960)

Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) gather together his old World War friends planning to rob the biggest, wealthiest casinos in Las Vegas. Of course things like this never go to plan in the movies and this is one of those scenarios. I must say it really does grind my gears when I talk about the movie and people think I'm referring to the more recent movie with Clooney. We cannot go without mentioning the musical talent, that is the Rat Pack.

How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable star as Schatze, Loco and Pola are all women who are on a mission and as the title suggests, all three are looking for that man with the money bags.  Of course the women find love alongside their search, however they aren't the men we would have expected as they never manage to distinguish the rich from the huxters. This was one of the first Monroe movies I had watched and didn't really like her character being the ditzy blonde as we perfectly know that was not her at all.

To Catch a Thief (1955)

Jewel thief John Robie (Cary Grant) returns to his usual robbing location, the Riviera. Although Robie is retired his out to catch the copycat burglar and begins the hunt by looking for those who own the most expensive collections of jewelry which so happens to be Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly) ad her mother Jessie Stevens. As you guessed both Robie and Stevens fall madly in love after accusations are thrown around in the hope of pinning Robie in connection with the crimes.

To Have and Have Not (1944)

Set in Vichy France, Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) tries to transport resistance fighter and his wife to Martinique. Morgan comes across 'Slim', better known as Marie Browning (Lauren Bacall) who captures his interest and agrees to help her get back home. Again, there is of course a heap of romance with this being the film that brought both Bogie and Bacall together although at the time he was married.

Au revoir mes beautés
